A chance conversation at a child’s birthday party has sparked a new initiative to uplift families in rural Kenya. The Holy Family Project, founded by John and Katie Kinuthia, aims to address pressing needs in Murang’a County, where poverty and limited resources create daily challenges for many.
The initiative began in March 2025, when John Kinuthia spoke with Pete DeMaio, founder of Mission, Love, and Life, during their son Leo’s sixth birthday celebration. Kinuthia shared his experiences growing up in rural Kenya, highlighting the harsh realities of poverty. For seven years, the Kinuthia family had been quietly supporting families in John’s home village, sending personal funds to help those facing famine, poor harvests, or personal hardships. Inspired to do more, they partnered with DeMaio’s ministry to expand their efforts.
In April, the partnership raised $800 to provide emergency food assistance, fertilizer, and maize seedlings to vulnerable families during the planting season. In Murang’a County, small land sizes, high input costs, and reliance on casual labor—often earning just $1.50 to $2 per day—make it difficult for families to afford basic necessities like quality seeds for their farms, piped water, and school fees. This project offered 25 families immediate hunger relief and long-term support for better harvests.
Local coordinators, Florence and Jason, met with families to assess further needs. Most families they serve are single parents, widows, elderly, or individuals with disabilities, struggling to afford food, clean water, sanitation, and school fees. Recognizing the scope of these challenges, the Kinuthias launched the Holy Family Project to provide sustainable solutions.
Guided by Matthew 25: 31-40 “For I was hungry…”, the project focuses on five key areas: food assistance, clean water access, hygiene products for girls, educational scholarships, and home repair and development. “Our mission is to empower families, addressing their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs while fostering lasting change, glorifying God in every action,” said John Kinuthia.
The Holy Family Project invites community support to bring hope and dignity to those in need.
The Holy Family Project is currently applying for Non-Profit status in the State of Pennsylvania and federal 501c3 status.
